Senior Data Scientist for Meteorological Modeling

The Danish Meteorological Institute is seeking a highly skilled data scientist with expertise in meteorological modeling to support the development and application of innovative data-driven models. This position is part of the Environmental Sciences department, focusing on meteorology and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP).

As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with international research partners in EUMETNET/ACCORD/HIRLAM/United Weather Center (UWC) to develop data-driven forecasting models, including anemoi and neural-lam. Your responsibilities will include contributing to a team in the Weather Research Department, with a focus on model development, in addition to core modeling work.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Master's or Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, atmospheric sciences, applied physics, data science, or a closely related field is required.
  • Substantial experience and a proven track record in scientific machine learning is essential, particularly in environmental sciences.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming is crucial, with strong proficiency in Python and familiarity with Julia and Fortran highly advantageous.
  • Experience with frameworks such as pytorch, pytorch-lightning, jax, Flux.JL, Zygote.JL, and MLFlow is beneficial.
  • Strong data management and analysis skills, including data pre-processing and post-processing, are vital for success in this role.
  • Linux operating system proficiency and scripting skills are necessary for working in our research environment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills are fundamental, with the ability to develop, implement, and clearly communicate structured working processes.

About the Department:

The Weather Research Department at DMI is comprised of approximately 60 scientists, with 25 working in the weather modeling section. We boast a diverse and internationally recognized staff, reflecting the collaborative nature of our research. DMI offers a flexible working week, inclusive of a paid lunch break, and provides 6 weeks of paid vacation annually.
