Machine Learning Scientist for Weather Forecasting

We are seeking a talented Machine Learning Scientist to join our team at the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). As a key member of our Weather Research Department, you will contribute to the development and application of innovative data-driven models for accurate and near real-time weather prediction.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement machine learning algorithms for weather forecasting, leveraging state-of-the-art techniques such as graph-based learning, Bayesian inference, and generative learning.
- Collaborate with international research partners to advance our understanding of weather prediction, focusing on the development of kilometre-resolution machine learning forecasting models.
- Contribute to the Weather Research Department, with a focus on model development, in addition to core modeling work.
- Work closely with colleagues to advance our understanding of weather prediction, ensuring smooth collaboration and shared understanding across teams.
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, atmospheric sciences, applied physics, data science, or a closely related field.
- Substantial experience and a proven track record in scientific machine learning, particularly in the context of environmental sciences.
- Proficiency in scientific programming, with strong skills in software development for data analysis and modeling.
- Experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, PyTorch-Lightning, JAX, Flux.JL, Zygote.JL, and MLFlow.
- Strong data management and analysis skills, including data pre-processing and post-processing.
- Proficiency in Linux operating systems and scripting.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to develop, implement, and clearly communicate structured working processes.
DMI is the national weather forecast and warning authority for Denmark and Greenland. With a rich tradition of operating and advancing models for numerical weather prediction, DMI stands at the forefront of high-resolution numerical weather forecasting.
We have approximately 380 employees, most of whom work at DMI's new headquarters at Sankt Kjelds Gård in Østerbro. The new place has interior design that allows for an activity-based way of working.
