København, Denmark the LEGO Group Full time

Are you motivated by building high-quality data pipelines and enabling large-scale data migration into modern platform architecture?

Do you want to help shape how the LEGO Group delivers trusted, performant, and future-proof data foundations that power analytics, AI, and operational excellence?

We are looking for a Lead Engineer - Data Engineering & Migration to join our Data Platform team and play a key role in designing, maturing, and operating the technical backbone for data ingestion, transformation, and migration across the LEGO Group. You will be based out of our Billund Campus or our Copenhagen office and act as both a technical expert and strategic driver, ensuring the successful migration of legacy workloads into our modern Data Platform while enabling scalable engineering practices for the future

Please note this role does not have relocation budget and you will need to work out of either Billund campus or Copenhagen Hub in Denmark.

Core Responsibilities

As a Lead Engineer – Data Engineering & Migration, you will combine deep technical expertise with strong collaboration skills to ensure our data products and migration initiatives are delivered with quality, performance, and reliability. Partnering with Product teams, and business stakeholders, you will help shape the technical direction of our migration journey, ensuring solutions are efficient, maintainable, and aligned with platform strategy. You will work closely with other lead engineers to ensure consistency across shared capabilities, standards, and architectural patterns.

Solution Architecture & Engineering

  • Design, build, and evolve data ingestion and transformation pipelines using modern data engineering technologies such as PySpark, SQL, Delta Lake, workflow orchestration, and distributed compute.
  • Define standards for performant, resilient, and maintainable data pipelines, ensuring engineering teams follow best practices across file-based datasets, modeling patterns, and compute optimization.
  • Shape the technical approach for migrating legacy workloads into the modern Data Platform, including patterns for refactoring, re-platforming, consolidation, and quality assurance.
  • Partner with engineers to guide implementation details and ensure solutions are fit for purpose, cost-effective, and aligned with platform architecture.
  • Support teams in adopting modern data engineering tooling, design patterns, and operational guardrails that simplify and standardize the migration process.

Collaboration & Delivery

  • Work closely with Product Managers, Program Managers, and business stakeholders to translate migration requirements into actionable technical direction.
  • Support the product team in defining the technical roadmap for data ingestion, modeling, and migration, ensuring alignment with the broader Data Platform strategy.
  • Present technical decisions, trade-offs, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Help drive planning and prioritization across migration initiatives by assessing complexity, effort, and resource needs.
  • Maintain a high-level understanding of both the modern Data Platform and the legacy landscape, ensuring coherence between new solutions and existing dependencies.
  • Engage across teams to ensure consistency in technical decisions and alignment in areas such as data structures, performance requirements, and data quality expectations.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Act as a technical role model in the Data Engineering & Migration space, setting high standards for code quality, performance, and sustainable delivery.
  • Mentor engineers to strengthen their skills in data modeling, distributed compute, and modern data engineering patterns.
  • Foster an engineering culture centered on responsibility, pragmatism, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to Architecture Decision Records and drive alignment in how we build ingestion, transformation, and migration capabilities.
  • Encourage a collaborative environment where teams challenge assumptions, make informed trade-offs, and learn from each other.

Strategic Contribution

  • Shape the long-term strategy for data engineering and migration within the Data Platform, supporting the shift towards an engineering-led, scalable delivery model.
  • Collaborate with other Lead Engineers to ensure cohesive architectural principles and shared capabilities across the platform.
  • Help define and mature the frameworks, patterns, and reusable components that will accelerate future migration efforts.
  • Contribute to building a trusted, high-performing data foundation that supports analytics, data science, and operational use cases across The LEGO Group.

Play your part in our team succeeding

The Data Office builds and runs The LEGO Group's central Data Platform and acts as a Centre of Excellence for data engineering, governance, machine learning, and AI. By joining us, you will help shape our modern data foundation and ensure we migrate from legacy solutions in a way that is structured, scalable, and future-ready. Your expertise will help the company transition confidently while unlocking new capabilities for data-driven decision making.

Do you have what it takes?

You bring a background in Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar, with hands-on experience designing and building modern data pipelines and migrating legacy workloads into new architectures. You enjoy solving complex data challenges, collaborating across teams, and enabling others to implement robust engineering practices.

Additionally, you have:

  • Proven experience with distributed data processing (e.g., PySpark, SQL, Delta Lake).
  • Strong understanding of data structures, modeling approaches, and best practices for scalable data engineering.
  • Practical experience building performant file-based datasets and optimizing compute performance in modern data platforms.
  • Experience contributing to or leading migration initiatives, including refactoring legacy pipelines or onboarding datasets into modern architectures.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to bridge conversations between engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders.
  • Proficient with orchestration tools, workflow management, CI/CD practices, and modern data platform capabilities (e.g., Unity Catalog, lineage, metadata).
  • Passion for enabling best practices, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Occasional travel to other LEGO Group offices.
