Lab Technician for cell culture and 3-D model assays

Copenhagen Metropolitan Area, Denmark BioInnovation Institute (BII) Full time 45,000 - 90,000 per year

Are you an organized and detail-oriented lab technician and want to make an impact in the underrepresented field of Women's Health? Do you thrive on carrying out cell culture and other experiments in the lab and work in a multi-disciplinary team?

Then join us at The BioInnovation Institute (BII) at Nørrebro, where we are currently looking for a Lab Technician to play a key role in our company-creation program.

The mission of BII is to create new life science solutions to address unmet societal or health needs. At BII, we have established a program, Bio Studio, which aims to build life science start-ups based on world-class research. Bio Studio projects are three-year grant funded projects sourced from leading researchers employed at research institutions worldwide. The projects we admit combine scientific novelty, commercial viability, and the potential for significant societal and/or health impact. The goal of the projects is to create a viable start-up company based on the project within the three years.

BII aims to recruit a strong project team for each Bio Studio project, and it is expected that this team will form the core of the future start-up deriving from the project. Apart from establishing a solid Project Team in Copenhagen, to be headed up by an Entrepreneur in Residence, BII provides a comprehensive network of industry, investors, and subject matter experts to support the projects.

A career at BII allows you to work with world-leading entrepreneurial scientists in a position where you will have a substantial chance to impact your job and the opportunity to develop your bio entrepreneurial skills.

Your Opportunity to Join BII's Bio Studio Program

We are launching an exciting new project focused on developing a human model of the maternal-fetal interface (complex
in vitro
model of the placenta) to become a validated preclinical safety tool in drug development. The project aims to address the general lack of data on fetal drug safety which so far limits treatment options for any condition during pregnancy or for women of child-bearing age. This innovative project has been initiated by a world-leading Principal Investigator from EMBL and represents a unique opportunity to support innovation in the underrepresented field of Women's Health.

As part of BII's Bio Studio program, this project aims to transform groundbreaking research into a viable startup company within a three-year timeframe. Your mission is to support the lead and senior scientists of this project in the development of placenta-chip models. This role will include maintaining multiple human primary cell cultures, preparing stock materials and fabricating microfluidic devices. The successful candidate will also collaborate and support the engineer and other team members by performing defined experiments where required (including imaging, molecular biology assays, 3D
in vitro
assays, etc.).

By joining our team, you will play an instrumental role in bringing this promising technology from laboratory concept to a validated, scalable model, with the potential to be used as a tool in safety/toxicology testing for the development of any drug.

Your ownership of our mutual journey will be:

  • Preparation of working stocks for cell culture and experimentation
  • Microfabrication of PDMS and resin chips (training provided)
  • Characterization of primary cells and readouts from the placenta model (molecular assays including qPCR, ELISAs, IHC, imaging)
  • Carry out experiments and analysis where required and directed by the lead and senior scientists
  • Reporting/tracking of stocks and routine experiments

Your daily work and well-being will be shared directly with the Lead scientist and Entrepreneur in Residence, but as a small community with close ties and bright minds, you should be prepared for many cross-functional and inspiring discussions that can help shape your work at BII.

Your Professional & Personal Qualifications

We are looking for a detail-oriented lab technician with excellent organizational skills. Besides being skilled in human cell culture, molecular biology and imaging techniques, you are also a great team player.

Other than these skills and experiences, we imagine that you also have:

  • MSc in Biomedicine, Bioengineering, Cell Biology or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in cell culture (preferably human primary or stem cells) and sterile techniques
  • Previous experience with organ-on-chip technologies.
  • Previous experience in performing molecular biology techniques (RNA-seq, qPCR, Western blotting).
  • Hands-on experience with microfluidics, microfabrication techniques, and 3D printing (working with PDMS, hydrogel scaffolds, and other advanced materials) is a plus.
  • Previous exposure to advanced imaging techniques, including live-cell imaging and/or confocal microscopy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.

You're known as a professional, pro-active and solution-oriented lab technician. You are a team player with a strong desire to contribute to a multidisciplinary team and the success of this innovative project. You are a collaborator that supports the scientific team members with defined experiments and report results to them.
