Copenhagen Metropolitan Area, Denmark BioInnovation Institute (BII) Full time 40,000 - 120,000 per year

Are you a meticulous and organized biology student looking for hand-on experience in a lab? Do you enjoy cell culture and other lab experiments? Are you interested in contributing to cutting-edge tech-development and learning microfabrication techniques?

Then join us at The BioInnovation Institute (BII) at Nørrebro, where we are currently looking for a Student Research Assistant to play a key role in our company-creation program.

The mission of BII is to create new life science solutions to address unmet societal or health needs. At BII, we have established a program, Bio Studio, which aims to build life science start-ups based on world-class research. Bio Studio projects are three-year grant funded projects sourced from leading researchers employed at research institutions worldwide. The projects we admit combine scientific novelty, commercial viability, and the potential for significant societal and/or health impact. The goal of the projects is to create a viable start-up company based on the project within the three years.

BII aims to recruit a strong project team for each Bio Studio project, and it is expected that this team will form the core of the future start-up deriving from the project. Apart from establishing a solid Project Team in Copenhagen, to be headed up by an Entrepreneur in Residence, BII provides a comprehensive network of industry, investors, and subject matter experts to support the projects.

A career at BII allows you to work with world-leading entrepreneurial scientists in a position where you will have a substantial chance to impact your job and the opportunity to develop your bio entrepreneurial skills.

Your Opportunity to Join BII's Bio Studio Program

We are launching an exciting new project focused on developing a human model of the maternal-fetal interface (complex
in vitro
model of the placenta) to become a validated preclinical safety tool in drug development. The project aims to address the general lack of data on fetal drug safety which so far limits treatment options for any condition during pregnancy or for women of child-bearing age. This innovative project has been initiated by a world-leading Principal Investigator from EMBL and represents a unique opportunity to support innovation in the underrepresented field of Women's Health.

As part of BII's Bio Studio program, this project aims to transform groundbreaking research into a viable startup company within a three-year timeframe. Your mission is to provide technical support for ongoing laboratory projects, assisting in routine cell culture maintenance, microchip fabrication, and general lab operations. The role is designed for a student or early-career candidate with foundational laboratory training. The research assistant will be expected to carry out routine procedures with accuracy, maintain a clean and organized workspace, and follow established protocols under supervision.

By joining our team, you will play an instrumental role in bringing this promising technology from laboratory concept to a validated, scalable model, with the potential to be used as a tool in safety/toxicology testing for the development of any drug.

Your ownership of our mutual journey will be:

  • Assist in routine cell culture maintenance (feeding, passaging, freezing/thawing).
  • Perform microchip fabrication processes.
  • Conduct basic laboratory techniques (solution preparation, IHC, imaging).
  • Assist senior staff with experiments as required.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and institutional guidelines.
  • Support lab organization (maintaining stock levels, cleaning shared equipment/areas).

Your daily work and well-being will be shared directly with the Lead scientist and Entrepreneur in Residence.

The working hours are 15-20 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate studies and exams.

Your Professional & Personal Qualifications

We're looking for a dedicated and collaborative team player with some
experience in cell culture and basic laboratory experience
. You thrive in a dynamic research environment, where precision, curiosity, and teamwork drive innovation.

Other than these skills and experiences, we imagine that you also have:

  • Completed (or near completion) of a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field

and has either started or is about to begin a Master's degree in a related discipline.
  • Some prior laboratory experience.
  • Basic training in cell culture techniques and sterile handling (preferably with human cells).
  • Familiarity with standard lab practices (record keeping, solution preparation, lab safety).
  • Exposure to PDMS-based microfabrication processes (preferred but not mandatory; training will be provided).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Responsible attitude towards safety and laboratory compliance.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols precisely.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and openness to feedback.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaborate effectively within a team.

You're known as a curious and coachable fast-learner with an eye for detail and great communication skills. You combine independence with teamwork, supporting the scientific team through defined lab tasks and clear reporting, driven by a shared commitment to this innovative project's success.
