Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark DMI - Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut Full time

Are you interested in working with climate models? And motivated by understanding climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic regions? Here is a great opportunity to join DMI's skilled team of climate scientists in the National Center for Climate Research.

About the job
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 3-year, full time position for a climate scientist to work on climate modelling with focus on the polar regions and the climate affecting the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. Polar research is a key research area in the National Center for Climate Research (NCKF), and our work is carried out in close collaboration with national and international partners (e.g. through EU Horizon projects such as PROTECT and PolarRES). As part of NCKF you will work in a department with a strong profile in both global and regional climate modelling, as well as remote sensing.

As our new colleague, you will work with our climate and ice sheet surface models that we employ in the Polar regions: Our regional climate model (HCLIM, HARMONIE-Climate) and/or our surface mass balance model of the ice sheets. We employ these models in many different research contexts, and also visualize the current state of the climate e.g. the polar portal webpage (polarportal.dk).

In this role, you will be designing and executing model experiments, as well as developing the model code in collaboration with colleagues at DMI and as part of international consortia. You will also work with analyses of the model outputs, lead and contribute to scientific papers and participate in developing new grant applications with the group and external collaborators. While working with the models(s) will be a core task, there will be some flexibility in deciding the weight between working with the model itself, running and analyzing experiments, and which particular topics and projects you work on.

About you
Expected qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in climate science, meteorology or related fields (e.g. physics or engineering)
  • Experience with climate modelling; preferably of the atmosphere or ice sheets (regional atmospheric modelling, numerical weather prediction, Earth system modelling, surface mass balance or ice sheet modelling)
  • Advanced programming skills (Linux/Unix and scripting languages e.g. Python, Fortran, etc.), and experience with HPC systems
  • Research experience working with polar (Arctic and/or Antarctic) climate is an advantage
  • Good communication skills in oral and written English

Application
Please send your application, including a cover letter with motivation for the application, a curriculum vitae, relevant exam papers and diplomas, possible other relevant appendices and contacts for relevant professional references, so we have it in our system by September 29 2024.

To apply for the position, please use the below link "Apply for Position", and follow the instructions.

We expect to hold interviews in the first two weeks of October. Starting date can be as soon as possible for the selected candidate.

Department: Lyngbyvej 100, København Ø
