Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

Join a research project focused on enzymatic technologies for human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) production. Responsibilities include enzyme expression, purification, and characterization, as well as enzyme design, protein engineering, execution of activity assays, and carbohydrate analysis.
We are looking for a qualified candidate for a 2-year postdoc position that will be part of an ongoing 5-year research project. The research project is funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark and is a collaboration between the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), University of Copenhagen (KU), and DSM-Firmenich (Hørsholm, DK). The project seeks to develop new enzymatic technologies for production of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) and involves enzyme discovery, enzyme expression and characterization, enzyme design and protein engineering to obtain HMOs. If you are seeking to establish your career as a top-level scientist whose results have impact for human health and nutrition, this postdoc provides a strong foundation for fulfilling this ambition.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Within the larger research project, the postdoc will be responsible for defined parts of enzyme expression, purification, and characterization, as well as for design and execution of enzyme activity assays. The optimal candidate will be involved in enzyme discovery/selection as well as protein design and engineering targeting enzymatic synthesis of specific HMO carbohydrate structures. The job involves close collaboration with industry and includes extensive collaboration within the project research group. The latter includes training of new group members and visitors in relevant laboratory technologies as well as supervision of selected BSc and MSc students.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). The PhD degree must be in biotechnology, biochemistry, enzyme technology, or another discipline relevant for enzymatic carbohydrate synthesis. In addition, required qualifications are:

  • Documented theoretical and practical experience in protein expression, enzyme purification and characterization
  • Documented theoretical and practical experience in design and execution of enzyme activity assays
  • Innovative, independent research capability and good problem-solving skills
  • A track record of publication with at least two first-author papers within the field of enzyme technology and/or carbohydrate enzymology in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken)
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, exceptional reliability, and a team-work mentality.

In addition, the optimal candidate has practical experience in one or more of the following fields:

  • Computational studies of enzyme structure-function relationships
  • Enzyme design to obtain new specificities and/or improved activities
  • Enzyme discovery
  • Carbohydrate analysis by HPAEC-PAD and/or LC-ESI-MS.
