Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time
Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to contribute to our cutting-edge research project on autonomous maritime surveillance. The successful candidate will be part of an exciting team focused on developing innovative technologies for safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement novel algorithms for cooperative simultaneous localization and mapping to deploy autonomous surveillance solutions for the maritime critical infrastructure.
  • Create multiple datasets including navigation, acoustic and optical data collected from both ASV and ROV.
  • Develop a cm-level accurate, semantic 3D "seabed-to-sky" map of a CMI using optical and acoustic features.
  • Perform accurate target tracking in GNSS and communication degraded environments.
  • Carry out experimental work with autonomous surface and underwater vehicles in real marine environments for data collection and validation of developed solutions.
  • Lead the preparation of scientific publications towards ISI journals and highly ranked international conferences.
  • Share findings of your research with qualified professional audiences.
  • Co-supervise BSc and MSc projects possibly within areas relevant to the PhD project.
  • Provide teaching assistance in BSc and MSc courses at DTU Electro.
Requirements

To be considered for this position, you should have a strong background in control/estimation theory and machine learning. Experience within the field of robotic localization, acoustic or optical perception is a plus. You must also have documented experience through courses, projects or former professional work to develop and test solutions for real robotic systems.

The successful candidate will have proficient skills in ROS/ROS2, Python and/or C++/C#.

Apart from academic qualifications, we place great emphasis on personal qualities such as curiosity, passion, and drive to uncover the unknown. Your energy enables you to collaborate effectively with peers and pursue independent work towards shared objectives.

About the Project

The PhD project builds on the strategic partnership between the Department of Electrical and Photonics Engineering (DTU Electro) and the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua). The research focus will be on development, implementation, and verification of novel algorithms for cooperative simultaneous localization and mapping.

The research has civilian objectives, but equipment restricted by export licenses and ITAR is being used. Eligible applicants are citizens of Denmark, Norway, NATO countries, Australia, Austria, Finland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Other applicants should provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered.

Work Environment

You will become part of an inspiring research environment focusing on the development of autonomous systems technologies for the marine environment. You will also gain international experience by engaging with academic institutions abroad.

Assessment and Selection

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Roberto Galeazzi (DTU Electro) and Professor Patrizio Mariani (DTU Aqua).
