Digital Media Research Fellowships at the University of Copenhagen

The Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for three postdoctoral positions in digital media and communication research beginning January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The positions are fixed-term positions for three years.
Project Overview
The successful applicants will become part of the project entitled GREENWATCH – Green Surveillance: Imagining a Sustainable Internet of Things, funded through a European Research Council Advanced Grant, 2025-2029. The project examines the potentials and challenges of employing the Internet of Things (IoT) as a communication system monitoring the effects of human activities on Earth's ecosystems, which further entails surveillance of human individuals and social institutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Three postdoctoral researchers will be hired to work on different aspects of the project:
- China: Conduct document analyses of product information, legislation, and other materials regarding IoT in China. Conduct fieldwork in China and contribute to collaborative and comparative analyses of what IoT is in different world regions and what it could become in the future.
- Europe: Conduct document analyses of product information, legislation, and other materials regarding IoT in Europe. Conduct fieldwork in Europe and contribute to collaborative and comparative analyses of what IoT is in different world regions and what it could become as part of the green transition.
- United States: Conduct document analyses of product information, legislation, and other materials regarding IoT in the United States. Conduct fieldwork in the United States and contribute to collaborative and comparative analyses of what IoT is in different world regions and what it could become as part of the green transition.
Qualification Requirements and Assessment Criteria
A Master's degree in a relevant field and 2+ years of experience with research on digital media and communication practices. Previous experience in qualitative fieldwork, document analysis, or both approaches is preferred. Fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese for the China position, and fluency in English for the Europe and United States positions.
Benefits
We offer a competitive salary of DKK 38,575 (approximately EUR 5,170) + a 17.1% contribution to the pension scheme, depending on qualifications and experience. A generous holiday package is also included. The positions are available from January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, and are fixed-term for three years.
