Autonomous Maritime Infrastructure Surveillance Research Opportunity

DTU Electro and DTU Aqua are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to a groundbreaking research project on autonomous marine systems. The selected candidate will focus on developing novel algorithms for cooperative simultaneous localization and mapping to deploy autonomous surveillance solutions for critical maritime infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement novel algorithms for multi-vehicle simultaneous localization and mapping using multimodal sensor technologies.
  • Create datasets for navigation, acoustic, and optical data collected from autonomous surface and underwater vehicles.
  • Develop a cm-level accurate, semantic 3D map of critical maritime infrastructure using optical and acoustic features.
  • Perform accurate target tracking in GNSS and communication degraded environments.
  • Conduct experimental work with autonomous vehicles in real marine environments for data collection and validation of developed solutions.
  • Prepare scientific publications for top-tier journals and conferences.
  • Share research findings with professional audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical skills and background in control/estimation theory and machine learning.
  • Experience in robotic localization, acoustic or optical perception is a plus.
  • Documented experience in developing and testing solutions for real robotic systems.
  • Proficiency in ROS/ROS2, Python, and/or C++/C#.
  • Strong communication skills in English for writing and presenting scientific results.
