Postdocs in Development and Test of Novel Types of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells – DTU Energy
2 days ago
In order to achieve the climate goals of reducing CO2 emissions, installations for converting renewable energy like wind and solar into electricity emerge rapidly throughout the world. The fluctuating nature of these sources creates a demand for storing this electricity efficiently for later use, or to use it to produce synthetic fuels like hydrogen or other “power-to-X fuels” that can be stored and used in other sectors. Efficient electrolysis technology will be key to this task.
Solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) is emerging as an important contributor in the field due to its flexibility, versatility, and high conversion efficiencies of >90% at the system level. DTU Energy has developed innovative and unique solid oxide fuel- and electrolysis-cell concepts. For example, low-cost metal based SOECs, cells utilizing mixed conducting electrode materials, as well as cells based on high-temperature protonic conductors. We have recently won support for several new projects in this area and hope you can see an interest in joining us in the important task of realizing such technology.
Further research and development is required to improve the performance and durability of the SOECs. This is the focus of the Postdoc projects, which will be carried out in close collaboration with partners from industry and academia. It will include the development of the fabrication of SOE cells using ceramic processing techniques such as tape casting, lamination, screen printing, and infiltration. The components & cells will be evaluated for their compositional and structural features using electron microscopy and tested for electrochemical performance and durability using, for example, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be working with a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, postdocs, and master- and PhD-students. The work to develop improved solid oxide cell technology involves materials synthesis, component manufacture and characterization. The manufacture will be based on ceramic processing and characterization efforts will focus on electrochemical and microstructural characterization.
You should thus preferably be:
- Experienced with lab-work.
- Experienced with recording and analyzing electrochemical data.
- Experienced with microstructural/compositional characterization tools (e.g. electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction etc.)
- Knowledgeable in inorganic material synthesis and characterization.
- A good team-worker.
- Have a strong educational background in technical sciences or engineering, i.e. chemistry, material science, physics, nano-technology, energy technology or similar.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice.
