Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

The DTU Aqua department is seeking a highly qualified professor to lead research in marine biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. The successful candidate will be part of the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, affiliated with DTU Aqua, and based at the institute's location in Kgs. Lyngby.

As a professor in marine ecosystems, you will be responsible for leading research on community-level marine biodiversity, from plankton to mammals, with a central focus on fish. Your key area of focus will be understanding how biodiversity varies in space and time and how it influences the functions of marine ecosystems.

The goal is to describe how external pressures, including fisheries and climate change, impact biodiversity and ecosystem function. You will be expected to bridge fundamental research towards improving scientific advice regarding the impact of stressors on marine ecosystem dynamics.

To be successful in this role, you will require research experience at a high international level within marine biodiversity, combining classical marine ecology, statistics, and machine learning. A track record of research leadership, including visionary strategic development and building an interdisciplinary research group, is also essential.

You will need to demonstrate a proven track record in attracting external research funding, coordinating national and international initiatives within the research field, and contributing to university-level teaching, including PhD students and postdoc supervision.

Your research field and working area will include:

  • Understanding the role of biodiversity for ecosystem function, stability, and resilience towards external perturbations, including human stressors and climate change.
  • Collation of existing regional data sources into cross-regional and global "big data" sets.
  • Application of modern statistical and machine learning techniques on big biodiversity data sets.
  • Teaching within marine ecology and biodiversity.
  • Engagement in international advisory functions regarding marine biodiversity and the ecosystem effects of fishery and other maritime activities.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages and, in time, master and teach/supervise in both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision.
  • International impact and experience.
  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development.
  • Societal impact.
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry.
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills.
  • Communication skills.

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
