Overview

Københavns Universitet invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in environmental chemistry, focusing on the catalytic properties of biochar for degradation of halogenated pollutants.

About the Job

The successful candidate will be part of the ARAGORN project, an EU soil mission initiative aimed at mitigating risks and restoring Europe's contaminated soils. The position is available from 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, with a duration of 12 months.

Key Responsibilities
  • Developing and testing biochar-oxidant composites for fast and full degradation of chlorinated compounds;
  • Assessing performance of optimized reaction systems at column scales with real contaminated soils and groundwater;
  • Comparison of performance of optimized reaction system to existing remediation technologies, including literature review and analyses of market products.

The postdoc will be responsible for activities related to both ongoing laboratory experiments and field investigations, as well as teaching. Additional duties may be assigned.

Requirements
  • A PhD degree in environmental chemistry, geochemistry, soil science, or a related discipline;
  • Strong knowledge of interface and redox chemistry;
  • Experience with physical and chemical analyses of soils;
  • Use of advanced characterization tools for material bulk and surface characterization;
  • Analytical chemical skills;
  • Competences within data management, data processing, and statistical analysis;
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience with collaborative work in multinational teams;
  • Excellent English writing and speaking abilities.
