Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) Full time

As a postdoctoral researcher at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, you will join a highly interdisciplinary team focused on harnessing the potential of biological systems. Recent advances in genomic code reading, automation, analytics, and data science have fundamentally changed the scope and ambition of microbial cell factory design.

The role involves exploring the impact of microbial secondary metabolites on other microorganisms in their natural environment. We aim to establish what effect these metabolites have on the composition and function of microbiological societies using an interdisciplinary approach with sequence-based, analytical-chemical, molecular, bioinformatic, and classic microbiological methods.

Your primary responsibilities will be:

  • To identify and characterize bioactive metabolites and their biosynthetic gene clusters from actinomycetes isolated from our sampling sites in Dyrehaven.
  • To develop, implement, and interpret assays to assess the chemical ecology of these metabolites in shaping microbial communities.
  • To survey the available literature and formulate own scientific hypotheses and questions in collaboration with colleagues at CeMiSt.
  • To write peer-reviewed scientific publications.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to join our 'soil microbiome' team supervised by Prof. Tilmann Weber (DTU Biosustain) and working closely with Prof. Ling Ding (DTU Bioengineering).

A formal qualification for this position is a PhD degree (or equivalent). Specific qualifications we are looking for include:

  • A strong background in natural products and documented practical experience in chemical ecology, preferably natural products chemistry, or molecular biology, genome mining, genetic engineering of natural product biosynthetic pathways.
  • Documented practical experience with filamentous actinomycetes or other non-model bacteria is beneficial.
  • Excellent theoretical knowledge on microbial natural product biosynthesis.
  • Demonstrated oral and written English skills.
  • You are a team player enjoying working in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and interacting with peers within the Center and partners.

The salary for this position is estimated to be around 58000 - 70000 DKK per month before taxes, depending on your qualifications and experience. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, and the period of employment is three years with a start date as soon as possible.
