Kongens Lyngby, Lyngby-Tårbæk Kommune, Denmark Danmarks Tekniske Universitet Full time

Are you establishing your scientific career within the area of material science and electrochemistry preferably of high temperature processes and looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions? It is right here at DTU.

The research is relevant for sustainable energy technologies involving applications of molten salts. Examples include charging/discharging of high-power density batteries, metal corrosion and mitigation for thermal storage and molten salt nuclear reactors, as well as electrochemical pyroprocessing of spent nuclear fuels.

This project is devoted to exploration of the electrochemistry of alloying and dealloying of, e.g., metal elements with aluminum. It is a joint project between DTU Energy and DTU Chemistry, the former has for decades been involved in R&D within sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies while the latter is active in molten salt research for environmental and energy applications.

Responsibilities and qualifications

This project is devoted to exploration of electrochemical behaviors of metal (aluminum) alloys preferably in molten chloroaluminates. The objectives include understanding of electrochemistry of alloy elements, establishment of lab scale electrochemical setups for concept proof and evaluation of the developed metal separation technique.

Your primary tasks include:

Optimization of chloroaluminate systems of molten salts or ionic liquids
Selection/preparation of aluminum alloys with lanthanides or other surrogate elements
Studies of electrochemical behaviors of alloy elements
Development of assessing strategies for the separation of alloy elements
Establishment of lab scale setups for concept proof and technical evaluation

Qualifications:
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree, preferably in chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or similar fields
Innovative skills and ability to work in an international and cross-disciplinary team
Knowledge or research experience in electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering
Preferably practical experience with high temperature materials research

The Department of Energy Conversion and Storage
is focused on education, research, and development within functional materials and their application in sustainable energy technologies. In a sustainable energy system a large part of the energy will be supplied by fluctuating sources such as solar and wind power. This makes it critically important to be able to convert and store the energy as needed. The researchers in the Department of Energy Conversion and Storage work on technologies and materials for direct conversion and subsequent storage of different forms of energy.

Technology for people

DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment. DTU has campuses in all parts of Denmark and in Greenland, and we collaborate with the best universities around the world.
