PhD Researcher in Sustainable Food Systems
17 hours ago
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to contribute to our research project on designing trajectories towards absolute sustainable and healthy diets. The successful candidate will have a strong background in sustainability assessment and food systems, and be able to generate evidence relevant to inform policies contributing to a sustainable future.
Global food systems pose significant challenges to planetary boundaries. To address negative sustainability impacts and drive food systems' transformations, decision-makers need data-driven insights into the environmental and health consequences of food production and consumption. This research project aims to bridge these gaps by leveraging modeling and multiple data sources to create pathways toward absolute sustainability, factoring in potential future changes in food production and consumption.
The PhD project will focus on defining nutritional and environmental boundaries for absolute sustainability assessment of diets and food systems. The candidate will analyze nutrition requirements, dietary patterns, health outcomes, and environmental impacts to evaluate the sustainability of diets in two different settings and design trajectories towards absolute sustainability of food systems.
As a PhD student, the candidate will join our team at the Risk-benefit Research Group at the National Food Institute (DTU Food) and work closely with the Section for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment of the Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering (DTU Sustain). The 3-year period will include an external academic stay, and the PhD project will be supervised by both DTU Food and DTU Sustain.
The successful candidate will be engaged in research, supervision, and innovation related to absolute sustainability assessment of food systems. They will be responsible for:
- Defining diet-related boundaries with regional environmental boundaries, including land, water, and pesticide use, eutrophication, and climate change.
- Determining environmental and health impacts of diets in two widely different countries.
- Using optimization techniques or other science-based approaches to define future scenarios that meet absolute targets for environmental sustainability, while maximizing benefits for the environment and human health.
- Being involved in collaboration with international partners.
- Writing scientific publications and presenting at conferences both at the national and international level.
- Being involved in teaching.
The candidate must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education.
The application will be assessed by Sara Monteiro Pires, Olivier Jolliet, and Lea Sletting Jakobsen.
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation, and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment.
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
The starting date will be December 1st, 2024, or according to mutual agreement. The position is full-time.
Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link 'Apply now', fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file.
