Senior Research Scientist in Earth Observation Foundation Models

Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Københavns Universitet Full time

The University of Copenhagen invites applications for a Postdoctoral researcher position to conduct research on foundation models for accommodating Earth Observation.

About the Project

Earth Observation (EO) data presents unique opportunities and challenges for machine learning research. The vast diversity of ecosystems, petabyte-scale data volumes, continuous coverage across multiple spectral bands, and substantial seasonal and diurnal variations pose significant hurdles. Furthermore, the varying spatial and temporal resolutions create complexities that necessitate innovative solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct novel research in the areas of stable diffusion and invertible neural networks for satellite image to image translation, exploring novel self-supervised methods on multi-source, multi-scale Earth Observation data, and developing computationally efficient algorithms for large scale Earth Observation.
  • Collaborate with other members in the research group, publish findings in leading venues, and participate in related duties as needed.
Requirements
  • PhD degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, GIS or similar.
  • Experience with some aspects of self-supervised learning, or stable diffusion.
  • Good programming skills in Python.
  • High level of motivation with the ability to conduct independent research by identifying key problems and driving projects to completion.
  • Proven skills in writing high-quality research papers and delivering effective presentations.
Working Conditions

The position is open from March 1st, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, with a length of employment of 2 years. The successful candidate will be based at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen and will work primarily with Ankit Kariryaa.

Salary

The salary is estimated to be around €60,000 - €80,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
