Copenhagen, Denmark University of Copenhagen Full time

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

The group of Functional Genomics at the University of Copenhagen is looking for a highly motivated postdoc to work on atrial development, morphogenesis and function using the zebrafish model organism. Employment is from 1 August 2023 or as soon as possible.

Our group and research
The newly started group of Functional Genomics is headed by assistant professor Pia Rengtved Lundegaard. We have a keen interest in the structure and function of the atrium, and to study this we use the zebrafish as a model organism. We study all aspects of development, morphogenesis and function of the heart, with a particular interest in the atrium.

Project description

Atrial function has been underappreciated in its role in the proper function of ventricles. We have previously shown that mutations in genes associated with dilated cardiomyopathy, are also associated with atrial fibrillation and atrial cardiomyopathy (Ahlberg et al. Nature Comms 2018, Collins et al, PNAS 2019).

Thus, we have a keen interest in the development and function of the atrium in health and disease. We are particularly interested in studying how mutations in cytoskeletal genes of the cardiomyocyte influence the development and the function of the atrium, and how atrial dysfunction affects the structure and the function of the ventricle. The student recruited for this project will work on existing mutants available in the lab, as well as generate new mutant and transgenic zebrafish models.
The techniques used to study the potential phenotypes will include both imaging techniques and electrophysiology, using the zebrafish as a model organism. Furthermore, the project will include CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, RNA sequencing (bulk and single cell), molecular biology methods, such as cloning and PCR, protein analysis and high-resolution imaging using confocal microscopy. Basic computer skills and an interest in bioinformatics (R-studio or Python) is an advantage as well.

Postdoctoral advisor is Assistant professor Pia Rengtved Lundegaard , Functional Genomics group , Department of Biomedical Sciences, plundegaard@sund.ku.dk.

Start: 1 August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter

Duration: 2 years
