Postdoc - Modelling of flexibility from light and heavy-duty EV charging clusters and their syn[...]
Do you want to be involved in the green energy transition? Do you wish to contribute to the development of E-mobility integration and are you looking for a career in R&D or academia? Then we have an opportunity
We invite applications for a 3-year Postdoc position that will contribute to the quantification of the flexibility from home and public charging stations, and the development of methods to exploit it. Synergies between EV charging and distributed generation should also be quantified, and their combined impact on the power system assessed. We offer a multidisciplinary, international, and friendly atmosphere, encouraging creativity, diversity, empathy, and teamwork. You will have a great opportunity to build strong networks with internationally known researchers at DTU and other universities as well as industrial partners.
You will be affiliated with the Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration in the Division of Power and Energy Systems. Collaboration with neighboring sections working on distributed energy systems, hybrid power plants, smart grids, power system flexibility, and market design and operation is encouraged. The Section on E-mobility and Prosumer Integration undertakes internationally leading research and teaching in the field of EV technologies, charging infrastructure and flexibility, advanced power electronics, battery energy systems, and hybrid AC-DC systems. The research in this section is multidisciplinary and is currently formed by 30 researchers from 15 different countries.
The postdoc project is part of the European research project AHEAD: AI-informed Holistic Electric Vehicles Integration Approaches for Distribution Grids.
The AHEAD project involves 21 partners from 11 countries and will create a simulation environment capable of predicting the most convenient location to place the electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and optimise both the usage of the power grid resources and the charging stations located in urban and rural areas. This simulation environment will exploit the unique features of currently available AI models and include two layers: the spatial mapping one (placing the chargers where the people need them to be) and the power grid one (placing the chargers where the grid can support them). Innovative smart charging algorithms will be designed and tested in the model, to minimize the impact of EV charging pools on the network, and ensure the consumers have economic benefits. Moreover, these smart charging algorithms will be tested in three demonstration sites, dedicated to assessing the technical and economic feasibility of smart charging light and heavy-duty EVs and vessels. Finally, the project will test innovative charging technologies such as slow, fast, and battery buffered fast charging, wireless charging, and V2G.
Responsibilities and qualifications
- Quantify the flexibility potential of different EV charging hubs, both public and private, including light- and heavy-duty vehicles
- Investigate possible synergies between the EV charging processes and the renewable energy generation and propose new methods to exploit them
- Quantify their combined impact on the power system and find the optimal location to maximize their usage and minimize their grid impact
- Investigate innovative charging technologies that can be combined with renewable energy sources and provide flexibility to the power system
The postdoc will have task responsibilities in both projects and will be involved in the coordination of the projects’ activities. Supervision of PhD and master students will be part of the job, along with participation in educational activities.
The candidate is also expected to actively contribute to raising funds for new research projects and to promote DTU activities.
The candidate must hold a MSc and a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with focus on energy systems. Areas of interest include controllability of charging stations, data analysis of charging datasets, and integrated modelling of energy systems with high penetrations of EV charging stations and PV systems.
As the position is part of research, development, and demonstration projects, it is important that the candidate is not only technically proficient but also able to work in a team and contribute to the successful execution of project activities.
Candidates must have the following technical qualifications:
- The ability to work effectively with data analysis, visualization, and applied statistics
- Knowledge of electric vehicle technology and innovative charging technologies
- Dynamic modeling and simulation of power systems components at distribution level
- Strong programming skills (MATLAB and/or Python)
- Experience with supervision and teaching of students
- Experience in fund-raising
Further, the candidate should fulfill the following:
- Dedicated person with desire to learn
- Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
- Fluency in communicating and reporting in English
- Experience in presenting results in technical reports and scientific papers
- Ability to clearly communicate technical content
We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation, and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment.
