Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Microbial Ecology

Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Københavns Universitet (KU) Full time

The Center for Volatile Interactions at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in marine microbial ecology. The appointment is for 2 years, and the starting date is negotiable. The successful candidate will become an integral part of a dynamic research environment focused on the study of marine volatile interactions.

Scientific Environment

The Center for Volatile Interactions offers a stimulating working environment with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for analyses of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), molecular analyses of microbial community structure and activity, as well as incubation and climate chamber facilities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with an international team of researchers and contribute to the development of the research project.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • The postdoctoral researcher will investigate fluxes of volatiles associated with marine bacterioplankton and phytoplankton, focusing on the importance of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton interactions for VOC production/emission.
  • The researcher will conduct field and experimental work, as well as cultivate bacteria and phytoplankton using molecular analyses of community composition, plankton activity measurements, and VOC measurements.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for lead-writing and co-authoring scientific publications.

Qualifications

We are looking for ambitious and highly motivated candidates with a PhD in marine microbial ecology or a related field. Fluency in written and spoken English is a requirement, as well as excellent writing skills demonstrated by a strong publication record. The candidate should have good analytical skills in molecular community analyses, aquatic microbial ecology, and cultivation of bacteria and phytoplankton. Experience with VOC measurements using GC-MS or PTR-MS techniques and multivariate statistics is an asset.

Application Procedure

Applications must be in English, submitted electronically, and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, complete list of publications, research plan, and pdf files of the two most important publications. The deadline for applications is negotiable.
